A Quote to Inspire

I feel like inspirational quotes have a brand new meaning these days. Ever since we found out about Ike's diagnosis, everything has just taken on a new meaning.

I had seen a quote on a T-shirt and fell in love with it. I immediately thought of Ike and my vision for Ike’s future. I wanted to get him that T-shirt, but in my head I couldn’t rationalize spending so much on something that he would only wear for a brief period in time.

After thinking about gift ideas I kept circling back to these metal signs that are so popular right now. As I thought about it more, it made a lot of sense to put a quote that had so much meaning, so much power, and so much inspiration behind it into something that he could take with him wherever he goes.

Last fall we went to a festival that showcased local merchants and their goods. We came across a company, called House of Sharp, who does customized metal signs. I actually ended up buying one at the festival. It was a sign to put in the garden that said “Grow dammit“. I love that sign.

When I came to the decision that I wanted to put a quote on a metal sign, I went back to that company's Etsy shop. I requested a custom design and they were of course very helpful. I had a great experience designing this sign. After a lot of thought and a few revisions we came up with something that was perfect. When I got it in the mail a few days later I was ecstatic. I couldn’t wait to give this sign to Ike!

I ended up designing this metal sign with the quote “I can and I will“. On his birthday, we wrapped the sign up and I finally got to see him open it. I knew a one-year-old would not get excited about a metal sign, however I was excited for him and his future. I knew looking at this sign every day would inspire him, encourage him, and let him know that he can do anything he puts his mind to. I love that this sign is something he will have forever and will be able to take it with him throughout the many stages of his life.

Truth is, no matter who you are or what you struggle with, there will always be people who have doubts. Surround yourself with those who believe in you and (most importantly) believe in yourself. When that happens, have no doubt, you can and you will.
